As the holidays approach, food temptations are bound to be on a whole other level. From yet another family member encouraging you to go in for seconds to the overflowing dessert table that’s staring at you from across the room, it can be harder than usual to resist.

Here, we’re sharing some tips on how to avoid food temptation during the holidays without being a total Scrooge. 

DRINK MORE WATER

One of the best ways to avoid overindulging in holiday treats is by making sure you’re properly hydrated. Oftentimes when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually just thirsty. So, make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day and especially right before you head out to a party.

Even better - bring your own reusable water bottle to carry with you to make sure hydration is never too far away.

MIND YOUR PORTIONS

There’s no need to completely deprive yourself of holiday food. After all, big feasts are all part of the festivities and when we’re too strict about our diet without ever allowing ourselves to sit back and enjoy, we’re more likely to binge later or resent our healthy lifestyles in general. 

Instead, be mindful of your portions and be careful not to overdo it. One trick is to load your meal with mostly protein and healthy fats. Well… as healthy as it can get over the holidays. These food groups will fill you up faster leaving less room for less nutritious options. 

You can still have a slice of pie later, but chances are if you’re aware of your portions and make a well-rounded plate, you shouldn’t get too far off track.

STEP AWAY FROM THE FOOD

The holidays revolve around food and it’s not going to be easy to avoid it altogether. But, instead of this fear-based approach, simply plan to do other things in addition to enjoying a meal with your family and friends.

Instead of catching up over the cheese plate, take a walk around the block. Instead of mindlessly eating chips and dip while watching “A Christmas Story,” keep the snacks in the pantry. On Christmas morning, plan games to play and things to do besides eating.

BRING THE HEALTHY OPTION

When invited to a potluck or if you’re in charge of a certain dish for Thanksgiving, offer a healthier alternative. Suggest a vegetable platter versus chips and dip. Sneak veggies into a sauce or offer to make everyone healthy smoothies for breakfast before the big feast. 

MANAGE YOUR STRESS

It’s no secret that the holidays can sometimes cause more stress than we’d like to admit. From spending money on presents and food to dealing with grumpy in-laws and family drama, it’s important to find ways to manage our stress. 

Stress not only causes our bodies to hold onto excess weight, but it also encourages emotional eating. Remember to take care of yourself and carve out some alone time throughout the holiday season to keep everything in check. Whether you take a yoga class once a week or you use kickboxing for some much-needed relief, find what works for you.
